Horton Hatches the Egg

5:12 PM

Mayzie is introduced as a lazy bird because she wants to leave her egg and go on vacation. So she insists that Horton the Elephant watch her egg instead. Although Horton goes through many challenges, such as enduring the harsh winter weather, not being able to play with his friends, being ridiculed for acting like a bird, and being sold to a circus, he stays with the egg because he is faithful to his promise. Horton’s faithfulness results in an elephant-bird hatching out of the egg. To the people’s amazement, Horton is able to leave the circus, with his baby elephant-bird.

Opinion/Critique
Although the book doesn't have a logical conclusion, Dr. Seuss nonetheless delivered a refreshing and amusing plot. I also really appreciate how the words come to life through the use of italics and capitalization. It would be a fun book to read to the students but not a recommended book to teach grammar.
Classroom application
Horton's character can be used to teach noteworthy character traits such as endurance and faithfulness. It can also encourage creativity when students write their own stories.
